(Underrated Cars is a series about cars that are underrated and/or under appreciated.)

Why don't you do a test? Get a bunch of Car enthusiast into a room, Tell the to talk about Hot Hatches, Wait 1 minute. It is almost guaranteed someone would have already said the following words: Peugeot 205 GTi

Wait until you realize you been listening to them for 5 hours and then kick them out the house. List the times one of them said: Peugeot 309 GTi

Probably zero times.

The Peugeot 205 GTi's bigger brother, the 309 GTi was never truly loved or even noticed by Hot Hatch fans. The 205 GTi was so great that most people forgot this car even existed.

To the specs:

130 bph @ 6000 RPM

119 lb-ft of torque @ 4750 RPM

124 MPH top speed

0-60 in 8.3 seconds

1905 cc 8-Valve engine fuel injected

5-speed manual transmission

Not exactly great specs by today's standards, but in the late 80's, early 90's, this was pretty darn good.

The 309 GTi seems to be one of those cars that if it was realised earlier or later, it would have been remember as a great car. However, being the production at the same this as the iconic 205 GTi, people only remember the smaller one.

(Therevengeofthesaab is a huge fan of Hot Hatches (especially the MK1 and MK2 Gti) and rally cars. He also spends waaaaay to much time on car websites)

Wow, that's some throw back to my youth. I grew up with a couple of these GTi s about. The thing was the 309 itself wasn't an all that desirable car, our local police force had them (regular four door type) as unmarked police cars and they out numbered the public owned ones 2:1 in my city so no one wanted to drive what the police were driving as you may get your car vandalised if it was parked up on a street over night. So the 205GTi and later the 306GTi were the main cars doing the rounds were the 309 died a death.

Not even in the French Province? That forces the rest of Canada to be bi-lingual even though they have no intention of ever using English themselves.

The 306GTi and 306 Rallye were quite prominent on the streets and you'd quite often see a small engined regular 306 pimped to look like a GTi or Rallye purely because the newly learned driver couldn't afford the insurance (or handle the performance yet) of the larger faster car.

It really does take me back to my school days watching them tear up and down the streets. You'd most often here them before you saw them getting the engines rev'ed to within an inch of their life and tyres screeching from junctions.

It was like they were pretending to be in a rally stage in one of these widebody kit 306 s.

In the whole scheme of things I don't think you missed out on much. The newer models of these the marques are great little cars and some of them aren't so little.

The new 208 is a really nice car indeed and Citroens DS range are fantasic little performers.
